Ivory Objects of Art

A selection of fine 19th century ivory

For centuries ivory has been regarded as a precious and useful material, able to be carved into incredible works of art as well as used for simple, practical items.  Until its trade was severely limited in the 20th century due to declining elephant populations, ivory was used to create a multitude of beautiful objects including boxes of all kinds, carved figures, card cases and game pieces as well as knobs, feet, finials and trim on an endless variety of pieces.  The Chinese and Japanese in particular have long valued ivory as an artistic medium and have created some of the most spectacular works of art in the material.  Sallea Antiques carries a wide variety of both European and Asian ivory, including French Dieppe-work, Japanese Shibayama, and Chinese pierced ivory.
