| A
variety of 19th century crystal boxes |
Sallea Antiques offers a large selection of crystal boxes
in many shapes, colors, and sizes. The majority of these pieces
are French, made during the second half of the 19th century
when the production of such items flourished at prominent
glasshouses like Baccarat and Saint Louis. The wonderful array
of colors available in crystal boxes is largely the result
of experimentation at Baccarat which started in the 1820s.
“Opaline,” an opal-like glass produced in a milky
white or pastel colors, was developed by Baccarat during 1850
to 1870.
Our inventory includes opaline and other colored crystal boxes,
as well as clear cut-crystal boxes. The metal mounts on all
crystal boxes range from simple to ornate, and can be made
of brass, silver, and ormolu or doré (both are names
for gilt bronze). Most crystal boxes have plain interiors
and were made to hold tea, candies, trinkets, or cosmetics,
although some are fitted with perfume bottles as beautiful
as the box itself. |
