Clocks and Barometers

Tortoiseshell Mantel Clock

Our inventory includes clocks of all sizes and styles, from full-size tallcase clocks to pocket watches.  We have Victorian mantle clocks with fanciful brass work, French glass-paneled carriage clocks and English tortoiseshell clocks of the finest quality.  Whether you are a clock connoisseur or simply decorating a room, you’ll find our clocks are wonderful companions to our boxes and other accessories.

Watch Stands & Boxes

The forerunner of the personal bedside clock, watch stands and traveling watch boxes date from the late 18th century through the Victorian period. Our inventory includes French boxes which are really miniature versions of the glove and jewelry boxes of that era, elaborately detailed with Boulle work or inlays of exotic woods or mother-of-pearl.

Some have beveled crystal windows through which to view the watch face and the interiors are beautifully finished as the boxes were most often displayed open.

BAROMETERS

Developed in the 17th century as a scientific instrument, the barometer became a popular (although inaccurate) weather-predicting accessory in fine European homes by 1800.  Perhaps the most popular design of the late 18th and early 19th century (and our personal favorite), the wheel (or banjo) barometer is an icon of Georgian style.  The best examples are crafted of the finest woods and feature intricate panels of inlaid flowers, fans, shells and other popular motifs of the period.  Most feature a thermometer and some have hygrometers, clocks, and levels.
